As you can tell by the title, my aspirations of slamming out an intense amount of work in my 6 weeks off before school have not gone exactly to plan. Life-ish things have gotten in the way, including catching up with friends I haven’t seen in ages due to my job, getting enough sleep, and attempting to consistently entertain my also jobless housemate throughout the day (he requires more attention than a Shiba Inu puppy).
That being said, I am getting things done. I’m exercising daily, switching on and off between bike (10+ miles/trip) and gym (targeted muscle groups). I accomplish something on one site or another every day. The secret craigslist app is now ready for production test, if only I could figure out why the friggin’ thing won’t deploy (help me Jay!). And I’m getting ready for the move to Bloomington in a month, which includes buying a car, setting up some logistics and reading Glut by Alex Wright . All-in-all, I’m staying busy.
So the point of this post is don’t expect to leap out of the gate, producing a large volume work the minute you quit your job. Your body and mind need time to decompress.
Taking a page from the 37Signals school of work has helped; enjoying life to the fullest and setting aside a nominal amount of time each day (or a few days a week) to work on your projects. Pair back on project scope by cutting your desired functionality in half or more to launch under time and under budget. Be prepared to kill work that may take too long or projects that may not have an impact. Break everything down to the most basic terms, right down to the core.
Bon Week-end!
